WBC2022 update Day 3: 29th June 2022

For CIB members Day 3 opened with the CIB General Assembly, the most important component of CIB’s governance, on which a separate news item is available.

WBC2022 then reconvened with a plenary session featuring keynotes from Sue Eddy, Chief Executive Officer Victorian Building Authority; Dongping Fang of Tsinghua University; and Jacqueline Cramer of Utrecht University.

The day finished with the Conference Dinner at the Town Hall, featuring an official welcome and Acknowledgment of Country, a performance by local duo Kinja, followed by an excellent dinner with exceptional service.

Some CIB formalities followed including a short speech by newly-elected CIB president Mark Hastak and then a presentation of awards by CIB:

    • BEST ABSTRACT: Traditional african vegetables in modular living walls: a novel approach towards smart cities, by Karen Botes (previously announced)
    • BEST PAPER: The Value of Dialogue in Alliances, by Derek H.T. Walker, Peter E.D. Love, Jane Matthews
    • BEST STUDENT PAPER: Reducing embodied carbon emissions of concrete modules in high-rise buildings through structural design optimisation, by Yang Zhang, Wei Pan, Yue Teng
    • MOST INNOVATIVE PAPER: Blockchain-based framework for a smart supply chain management in construction, by Ricardo Oliveira Gomes, Gisele Cristina Teles dos Santos, Elaine Pinto Varela Alberte, Alex Pires Carneiro.
  • Winners of the CIB Best Doctoral Dissertation Awards 2021: Dr Esmaeel Eftekharian at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and Dr Jessica Borg at RMIT University, Melbourne. The third winner Dr Ahmed Daoud at London South Bank University was unable to attend in person. all 3 had been previously announced and their episode of CIB in Conversation can be seen here, but it was a delight to recognise them in person on stage.
  • Certificates of recognition to the outgoing CIB Officers who served in the triennium 2019-2022.
  • Winners of the CIB Wim Bakens Best Coordinator Awards for 2022: Billy Hare and Fred Sherratt of W099 – Safety Health & Wellbeing in Construction and Fedelis Emuze of W123 People in Construction.
