Culture and Digitalization in Construction Safety
In collaboration with the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB W112 & W092) and the Institute of Safety and Health Practitioners (ISHP), the Department of Real Estate and Construction at the University of Hong Kong successfully hosted an international research series titled ‘Culture and Digitalization in Construction Safety’ on October 25th, 2024. The event attracted substantial interest, with over 300 attendees participating both in-person and virtually.
The event featured presentations from renowned speakers including Prof. Shuibo Zhang from Tianjin University presented on ‘Digitalization in Construction Safety: A Cultural Perspective’ and Prof. Hedley Smyth from University College London shed light on ‘Digital Adoption for OHSW and the Role of the Construction Firm’. Prof. Steve Rowlinson from the University of Hong Kong discussed ‘Why the Construction and Real Estate Industry Business Models are Broken and Their Effect on OHWS’. Prof. Wilco Tijhuis from the University of Twente spoke on ‘Culture’s Influence in a Digitalizing Construction World: Challenges ahead!’. Ir Dr. Wong Chun-kuen, George from the Construction Industry Council (CIC) updated attendees on CIC’s work on culture and digital technologies for construction safety. Prof. Isabelle Chan from the University of Hong Kong explored ‘Automation Culture: Investigating Human – Machine Collaboration in Construction Safety Automation’.
A panel discussion was held to concluded which intended to encourage constructive dialogue and deepen understanding on the topics of digitalization, culture, and construction safety. The wide array of topics presented by the distinguished speakers sparked vibrant discussions and vigorous audience engagement!
