CIB Global report – Revisiting Offsite launched

CIB launches CIB Global Report – Revisiting Offsite: A New Capability-Driven Research Roadmap for Offsite Design, Manufacturing and Construction.

CIB continues to be at the forefront of pioneering research and innovation through its 35 Working Commissions, Student Chapters and dedicated Task Groups. Collectively, this work both shapes and informs future decision making – especially through its explicit alignment with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The CIB Research Roadmaps aim to provide authoritative guidance and support for national and international research bodies and funding agencies.

Drawing on the foundations of CIB’s first offsite roadmap in 2013 “A Prioritised Offsite Production & Manufacturing Research Roadmap (TG74 Publication 372), a new roadmap “CIB Global Report – Revisiting Offsite: A New Capability-Driven Research Roadmap for Offsite Design, Manufacturing and Construction” is now available for public release through W121 (Publication 430). This roadmap reflects on the antecedents and findings of Publication 372, highlighting the significant developments that have occurred over the last 10 years. From this, a development team was established to evaluate organisational performance in the offsite sector. This used capability maturity assessment – a uniformly recognised approach for  embedding industry-driven metrics with performance criteria.

Offsite Drivers: People, Process and Technology

Offsite Drivers: People, Process and Technology

People, Process and Technology

From this, a model was developed which allows organisations to undertake “self-assessment” introspection across a number of themes (People/Process/Technology). Findings are supported with clear guidance procedures across a range of high impact areas. These areas include (but are not limited to): platform strategies/resilience models; market drivers/demand; resource allocation (materials/labour); skills/upskilling; innovation levers; technological/process/automation and additive manufacturing approaches; decarbonisation strategies/pathways; and measures through which organisations can assess the impact of driving/restraining forces on their transition to Industry 5.0.

Some of the “golden thread” takeaway points from this roadmap include:

  1. understanding relationships (from different  perspectives)
  2. creating clear enabling environments that support new ways of working
  3. development of product (brand) identity along with innovation exploitation stages
  4. being able to pattern match hybrid solutions against opportunities such as autonomous systems
  5. having a much deeper understanding on bespoke offsite skills pathways (at all levels); and finally
  6. the need to engender, support and encourage greater transparency on “open solutions” – to not only support co-design, production/assembly and logistics, but also reinforce the clear offsite advantage and the benefits that this can bring.

In summary, it is safe to say  that this journey was very time-consuming, challenging and complex; but equally, exceptionally eye-opening and rewarding. This new roadmap captures current thinking and insight from over 130 offsite industry/research experts. We wholeheartedly extend our deepest gratitude to all those involved in helping us reach this significant milestone. Thank you all!
