Dr Shen Wei, New Joint Coordinator, W098

CIB W098 welcomes new Joint Coordinator Dr Shen Wei from The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction at UCL, joining long-time Coordinator Professor Derek Clements-Croome. Shen’s visionary statement is below. CIB and W098 is thankful for the excellent work of Tong Yang, Middlesex University, for her outstanding service as Joint Coordinator.

Dr Shen Wei Personal Statement:
Intelligent and responsive buildings is a major research interest of mine, starting from 2008
when I was doing my PhD study at Loughborough University, UK. Rather than technology, my
research focuses more on how we can better understand building occupants’ behaviour and
needs to make the system control more intelligent and responsive, and because of this I have
been contributing actively in two major IEA-sponsored projects, i.e. Annex 66 (Definition and
Simulation of Occupant Behavior in Buildings) and Annex 79 (Occupant-Centric Building Design
and Operation).

Besides my PhD degree in building services engineering, I have obtained an
undergraduate degree in building services engineering and a master degree in mechatronics
engineering. The combination of these three educational experiences gives me a strength of
researching intelligent and responsive buildings, which I believe will be a fast development area
in the next couple of decades.

At UCL, I am now teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students (including PhD
students) and I have tried to combine relevant knowledge/discussions about how our buildings
can be more intelligent and responsive to the changing needs of people and climate. For my
research, this area is also a major direction, and in the past 10 years I have been working on
many relevant projects sponsored by British Council, EPSRC, National Science and Technology
Major Project of China and so on.

I started to know CIB W98 commission after I joined the CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building
Services Engineers) Intelligent Buildings Group, which is led by Professor Derek Clements-
Croome (the current leader of CIB W98). These two groups often work together on relevant
events and publications. In 2019, I organized and chaired a one-day technical symposium
‘Designing & Operating Buildings for PEOPLE’ and this event was a CIBSE-CIB event. I am now
preparing another event for 2013, which is about low-carbon solutions for buildings.
CIB W98 has provided an excellent platform to promote the development of intelligent and
responsive buildings and if I can become a coordinator of this commission, I am planning to start from the following things in the next few years:

  • Attending future CIB meetings to meet coordinators of other commissions
  • Promoting the collaboration with CIBSE Intelligent Buildings group on both technical events
and publications, as well as collaborations with other CIB commissions
  • Updating the CIB website to make it more interactive to visitors
  • Promoting the impact of CIB W98 in both industry and academia, starting mainly from the UK and China.

I am really looking forward to working with Professor Derek Clements-Croome in the CIB W98
in the future!
