CIB’s Third-party funding initiative, led by Vice-President Makarand (Mark) Hastak, has been strategizing in 2021 and is setting out a tactical plan to talk with potential funders in 2022. A number of insurance companies and banks have emerged as potential funders of built environment research topics particularly under the broad umbrella of ‘climate change’, and several discussions have centered around how investment in the built environment impact the recent COP26.
To that end, CIB is seeking input from members who have capabilities within the topics of Carbon, People, Resilience, and some miscellaneous topics as categorized below. Members who have any previous evidence of capabilities, such as symposia, workshops, research reports, publications, laboratories, etc., please reach out to Programme Director Michael Behm at [email protected] by mid-January.
We are looking to create a prospectus and talking points to help promote CIB’s global membership capabilities in these areas to these potential funders. CIB’s CEO Don Ward will be meeting with individual banks and insurers in early 2022. We hope to put together a CIB team or task group centered around any funding opportunities that emerge from these more specific discussions.
The summary topics put forth by the banks and insurers are:
CARBON
- Understanding it – embodied, operating, ancillary of each
- Measuring it – false constraints currently exist (cost-effectiveness tool restrictions), additionality component
- Carbon Accounting and offset markets – how to determine validity of claims; are any proven models available internationally
PEOPLE
- How to include societal issues when reviewing climate change issues – less affluent communities have disproportionate impact
- Rationale for including People in climate change plans or the funding of climate plans
RESILIENCE
- Establish Metric(s) – to what degree is a building, community or city resilient?
- Capacity – information/guidance, training, various stakeholder groups (owners, operators, etc.)
- Integration with Codes
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
- Understanding barriers to climate migration/adaptation (internal organisation and external/client focused), and the resolution of these barriers
- Transitioning to a low-carbon future
- Physical risk (drought, water damage, etc.)
- Understanding how nature can help
