The 2022 World Building Congress on Tuesday 28 June began with RMIT host Professor Ron Wakefield delivering a welcome to country in the Storey Hall Auditorium.
The morning progressed with Keynote Speaker Thomas Uhd, who joined us in Melbourne, and Paul Cartuyvels, who joins us online from Europe. Thomas discussed the path to sustainable concrete construction, and Paul’s speech was titled “Scientific Excellence for Urban Regeneration.”

CIB’s Programme Committee Chair Kalle Kähkönen officially launched the CIB Vistas Programme and delivered the overview of the Visits vision and mission. Programme Committee member and W099 Joint Coordinator Fred Sherratt inspired the audience with details about Vistas and a proposal from CIB member Esra Kurul from Oxford Brookes University.
Employability Workshop for Research Candidates and ECRs (Session 1)
In the past year, CIB Student Chapters in five universities conducted a collaborative research project on the employability of the research students and ECRs. We tried to better understand the current training program’s limitations and potential improvements that can better support the research candidates and ECRs’ future careers in academia and the AEC industry. Discussion with the academic and industry leaders who have a great passion for facilitating the employability of research candidates and ECRs. Two panel discussion sessions will be hosted were held with experienced experts from both academia and the AEC industry.
Daily proceedings ended with a free evening, to give delegates a time for some rest and recuperation – and/or alternatively to enjoy the delights of an evening in Melbourne.
