
CIB W120 Working Commission on Disasters and the Built Environment is resuming its activities in 2025 with a renewed commitment for strengthening disaster resilience in the built environment. As disasters become more frequent and severe, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among researchers, industry experts, and policymakers is more critical than ever.
A Platform for Global Knowledge Exchange
W120 serves as a vital platform for researchers to share knowledge, best practices, and real-world solutions. Our focus includes, but is not limited to, disaster risk reduction, resilient infrastructure, climate adaptation, post-disaster reconstruction, and technological advancements, including digital innovations for disaster resilience.
Key Activities for 2025
A series of interacting activities has been planned for 2025, but not limited to:
- Online Webinar Series: Regular discussions with expert speakers, focusing on critical topics in the field.
- Multi-Sectoral Roundtables: Facilitating conversations between academics and practitioners to tackle sector-specific challenges.
- Local and International Conferences: Organising conferences to showcase research findings and practical solutions to global and regional issues.

Our commission is dedicated to fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to address the increasing challenges posed by disasters.
Aims of CIB W120
The commission’s objectives are to:
- Explore optimum means of engaging multiple stakeholders in collaborative projects that address issues of disaster and development through built environment solutions
- Encourage strategic urban planning through development of an evidence base supporting built-in disaster risk reduction (DRR)
- Advocate for the deployment of the appropriate built environment professionals in support of DRR activities
- Develop tools / frameworks / models to support built environment organisations in complex environments in a variety of global contexts
- support the embedding of disaster and development issues in the curriculum of built environment disciplines globally, encouraging the consideration of broader career paths.
