International Journal of Construction Management invites research papers on the above theme for inclusion in a “special issue” to be published in 2022. The special edition will be edited by Dr. Nnedinma Umeokafor (Liverpool John Moores University), Dr. Chioma Okoro (University of Johannesburg), Prof Abimbola Windapo (University of Cape Town), and Prof Nicholas Chileshe (University of South Australia).
Aim and scope
Globally, the building, construction and property sectors contribute significantly to the gross domestic product, labour share, and infrastructure development, thus, the growth in both developing and developed countries. For example, in the United Kingdom, the construction industry contributed £117 billion (approximately 159 US dollars) to the economy in 2018. The construction and property sectors contributed 83 billion rands (5.4 billion US dollars) and R191-billion (approximately 13 US Dollars), respectively, to South Africa’s GDP in 2020. The Australian construction industry generated over $360 billion in revenue, producing around 9% of Australia’s Gross Domestic Product in 2020. The United States of America’s construction industry accounted for approximately 1.4 trillion USD in 2020, 4.3% of the GDP of the country. In the same year and in Southeast Asia, Chinese construction industry’s input to the economy was 2,601.270 billion RMB (approximately 412 million USD).
However, despite the significance of these sectors, they continue to face a range of sustainability challenges: poor health and safety records, gender inequality, labour issues including skills shortages, use of unsustainable materials, environmental pollution, and inefficient procurement practices. In addition, the sectors also lag behind in adopting innovative practices to foster and assure sustainable development. However, there are boundless possibilities, opportunities, and vehicles to tackle these challenges.
Further, whilst there is a plethora of studies undertaken on ways to attain sustainability and innovation in the building, construction and property sectors; the extent of improvement is minimal relative to the challenges. Therefore, a continuous discussion is paramount to explore further innovative and sustainable ways to address these issues in different economies and contexts.
This Special Issue explores the building, construction and property sectors associated with the delivery of challenging projects and aims to provide a medium to consolidate and disseminate the current inherent issues related to sustainability and innovation in the building, construction, and property sector. This special issue will be useful to academics, built environment professionals and practitioners, and students based on the emergent research findings.
Topics for papers
Submission types such as case studies, original research contributions, systematic reviews, conceptual papers, experimental and original research contributions are welcomed. Topics may include but are not limited to:

Submission Instructions
When submitting to the journal, indicate that it is for a Special Issue by choosing the option ‘Innovation and Sustainability in Building, Construction, and Property’ and state this in the cover letter else your submission will be considered a regular issue. Papers will undergo a double-blind review process with engaging multiple reviewers. All queries should be addressed to the guest editors.
