Overview of special issue
This special issue aims to explore the global community’s best practices/experiences in housing adaptations for healthy ageing across the globe. As the aged population is currently at its highest level in human history, healthy ageing and independent living for the elderly and the disabled are crucial. This special issue will serve as an intersection, means of knowledge sharing, and inspire connections among scholars and practitioners who generate and support housing adaptations around the globe.
There is developing literature that explores the effects of housing adaptations on aging in place, however, it is surprising to find that so little empirical research has been conducted on local adaptation systems and practices. Very few studies, such as Oyegoke et al. (2022), Zhou et al. (2021), Bibbings et al. (2015), Jones (2005), and Keeble (1979), have focused on investigating the conceptual, theoretical, and practical framework for housing adaptations and improving their effectiveness, which is essential for disabled/older people to receive timely assistance and overcome the risks of environmental barriers. Ageing in place is a global issue that fraught with different problems in different countries. Different countries have responded differently to solve some of these problems. This special issue will provide the platform to share best practices across the globe.
