Mark Shelbourn, Joint Coordinator, W089 – Education in the Built Environment.

CIB’s Programme Committee recently approved Dr Mark Shelbourn as Joint Coordinator of W089 – Education in the Built Environment.  He joins Dr Richard Burt in the leadership role.

Dr Mark Shelbourn Personal Statement:

The CIB W89 Education in the Built Environment commission is something I hold dear to my heart as I have had a passion for education in the Built Environment since completing a PhD in 2000 in Computer-Aided-Learning in Building Pathology.  Throughout my 20+plus years academic career from module leader, course leader and leader of teams that has meant I am heading the Department of Built Environment at Birmingham City University, I have had a keen interest in promoting teaching and learning in the Built Environment. I have built up a vast knowledge of expertise in teaching and learning in the Building Surveying and Construction Project Management fields. Combining these together with new digital technologies as Associate Professor in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Digital Technologies has meant I have led and worked in a number of teams of differing sizes and complexity.

Whilst I worked in the School of Built Environment at the University of Salford I formed the Education and Learning in Built Environment (ELBE) research group. The group has several academic colleagues in the school as well as international academic and industry expertise as members. As the group leader I developed and implemented a strategy that considers the wider issues for built environment professionals, from young people thinking of entering the industry, to the life-long learning for people throughout their careers. The group is concerned with understanding and applying innovation in the learning and development of people who are delivering the current and future built environment. Led by myself, the group is outward facing and is working with partners in education, local government, professional institutions, and industry to ensure that there are people that meet the industry’s future needs, something that the CIB W89 commission has at its core.

At the beginning of 2020 I was elected to the Executive Board of the Council of Heads of Built Environment (CHOBE) where my skills as an academic leader have been recognised. I am working with likeminded colleagues to , again something that is shared with the CIB W89 commission.

I would relish the opportunity to work with likeminded people to take the CIBW89 commission forward.  Working with Joint Coordinator Dr Richard Burt, Mark’s plans are:

Re-invigorate the membership – reach out to existing members and improve the number of members.

A number of (virtual) events will be held to highlight the work of the working group. It is proposed that W89 hosts joint events with organisations such as:

Currently there is no website to showcase the working group. Richard and I would set one up.

The working group has some confusion with the name. As part of moving it forward a vision and strategy will be formulated to define the scope of the group and future direction. Using the membership to help with this formulation will be key.

We propose to have a dedicated session for the World Building Congress in Melbourne, 2022. Richard and I would explore the opportunity of these papers being a special issue in a Journal.
