CIB President's seminar series

The second seminar in the CIB President’s seminar series 4 is on Innovation for sustainable construction in Europe with Bart Ingelaere and Huub Keizers on 13th September 2024.

The construction sector, often perceived as slow to change, is now facing significant challenges that demand swift adaptation. In the Benelux region, critical issues include the affordability of construction, labour shortages, and the rising costs associated with a lack of building plots (very high population density, conflicts with nature protection), ecological regulations (CO2, N2, natural areas, sustainability, energy savings, circularity). These factors necessitate a shift towards process-driven construction, emphasizing digitalization, standardization, and sustainability. Moreover, the sector must explore new markets and business models, while embracing co-creation within and beyond traditional value chains.

The presentation will highlight technological advancements such as process optimisation (BIM, building product passports, automatic performance checks, Dutch-Belgian collaboration thanks to CIB) , industrialization, dimension modularisation, new materials and systems, p.e. innovative solutions like mid-high rise wood buildings, addressing acoustic and fire safety challenges. These developments underscore the need for the construction industry to adopt a long-term, future-oriented approach and the need for international collaboration to reach the global goals.

Speakers

Bart Ingelaere, GCO at Buildwise, Belgium, and Huub Keizers, Business Manager Circulair Construction & International Collaboration at TNO, The Netherlands, together with more than 50 years of experience in construction, digitalization and international collaboration.
