Objectives and Scopes

The Scope of the Commission’s work includes:

  • The Relationship between Education and Practice
  • Architectural, Urban, Cultural & Management Contexts
  • Style and Arrangement of Organizations
  • Procurement and Processes to improve the Quality of the Built Environment
  • Tools such as Virtual Reality and City Information Management

The Commission’s Objectives are to:

  • promote excellence in the practice of Architectural Design and Management
  • engage with Schools of Architecture, and Civil Engineering worldwide
  • advance areas of common interest with other Working Commissions
  • develop a Network of International Researchers to:
    • facilitate partnerships for authoring academic journal papers and developing research funding bids
    • fund research with practices – in which practices do not need to make high financial/time commitments
    • investigate the ways that design research might be funded and given legitimacy both through industry and government partners
    • expand dissemination activities to maximize impact and reach
    • define and guide impact generation from research activities and outputs

Current Work Programme

  • An Urban Cluster has been established with W101 Spatial Planning and Infrastructure Development, W116 Smart and Sustainable Built Environments, and TG97 Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilient Buildings and Communities
  • A Workshop will be run at the DBMC International Conference 2026 in Montreal on Introducing Nature to the City
  • A major international event will be organised for 2027, to debate urban research issues, run workshops, and assemble teams for research publications, including a journal special issue and research bids

2019: Research Roadmap 416 Architectural Design and Management – periodically updated

2025: edited book Architectural Design and Management in the Digital Age: International Perspectives

2025: papers discussed and hosted workshop on Emerging Challenges in City Centres at WBC2025

Planned Output

A follow-up publication to the CIB Accessible City and/or an academic journal paper will be produced in 2026 on the Regenerative City
