AAU ranks in the top ten on the main rankings of the world universities and their contribution to the UN’s world goals. With a first place in the world goal of quality education and a second place in the goal of clean water and sanitation, AAU ends up in a total sixth place among more than 1000 global universities according to the recognized Times Higher Education.

alborg University is one of the universities in the world that contributes the most to sustainable change. According to a fresh ranking of universities’ contributions to achieving the UN’s global goal of sustainable change, AAU ranks sixth among more than a thousand universities worldwide.

Times Higher Education is one of the most recognized global rankings for universities, and their Impact Ranking honors AAU with a world number 4 ranking on quality education and a world rank 6 on clean water and sanitation in addition to the overall sixth place ahead of 1109 other universities like US MIT .

– I am pleased with the recognition that our researchers deliver top results in a wide range of disciplines, which together make the world more sustainable. That we are again number one in quality education is another confirmation that we have something very special with AAU’s problem-based learning model, PBL, and are still one step ahead in further developing it, says Rector Per Michael Johansen.

TOP RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS WORK ON EACH INDIVIDUAL WORLD GOAL

Behind the great rankings are piles of research results and projects within each of the UN’s 17 world goals, such as goal 6, which is about clean water and sanitation for everyone on earth, and where AAU achieves a global second place.

Here, AAU researchers develop e.g. a DNA-based method that can map bacteria in wastewater faster than today and will mean that the treatment plants in the future can reduce the consumption of energy and chemicals.

As part of the problem-based learning model, AAU students also work concretely to achieve the UN’s world goals already during their studies. Eg. During their education, two students developed a special bag that can only purify four liters of drinking water in four hours using sunlight. The so-called SolarSack has been tested in Uganda and can provide clean water to two million people in East Africa.

Other AAU researchers working with World Goal 6 are leaders in, among other things. water treatment membranes, pesticide discharges, flood prevention and future-proofing of water infrastructure, while AAU also has world-class facilities as the world’s largest laboratory for the analysis of microplastics in water.
