CIB Full member ÉMI hosted the 127th meeting of the CIB Board in Szentendre near Budapest, with 23 Board members in attendance as well as 3 Guests of the Board.
The meeting was held in hybrid meeting, and we are particularly grateful to those attending in person as the quality of the interactions and strategic discussions was high.
CIB President Mark Hastak expressed a warm welcome to all Board members and thanked Adrienn Buday-Malik, CEO of ÉMI, and her colleagues for hosting the meeting.
The main business conducted over the two days focused on strategy development, with sessions covering the following topics and a business plan emerging which will be shared with CIB members when finalised.
- Improving the membership proposition
- Membership growth and third party funding opportunities
- Core activities of CIB (Commissions, Task Groups, ECR network, Student Chapters)
- The financial budget and optimising the secretariat model.

CIB Working Commissions
The Board was concerned to help any inactive Working Commissions re-engage with their members, and a target was set of March 2023 to enable all existing Coordinators to confirm they are on track or will hand over to new Coordinators. CIB’s guidelines will also be updated to help Coordinators avoid difficulties in future.
Student Chapters and ECR network
The finding allocation for CIB’s awards in 2023 was approved to a total of €5,500. It was also decided to extend the offer of free ECR membership to the end of 2023, this is a valuable opportunity for any early career researcher who is not employed by a CIB member organisation.
Membership & Communications Committee
Chaired by Kathy Michell Michell of University of Cape Town, the committee’s key strategies were confirmed as improving the membership value proposition, a network of Regional Champions to support CIB’s presence in key parts of the world, and strategic outreach to important organisations such as UN, World Economic Forum, World Bank and regional development banks.
