In September 2021 we recorded an episode of CIB in Conversation with newly-promoted Professor of Construction Sociology at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, Fred Sherratt.
She talked to Don Ward about her early career as a site secretary, how that shaped her passion for the sector and her interest in undertaking a PhD and then remaining in academia. She had some great advice for young people, and for early career researchers – the 4Ps of Pennies (research funding), Papers, PhD students supervision, and Profile. This led her on to talk about the value of CIB in her career and her role as Joint Coordinator of the CIB Working Commission W099 on Safety Health & Wellbeing. Her current research interest is the interlinkage of well-being with wider ‘systemic/ecological’ issues in the sector, such as procurement and supply chain management, which establish the culture which can impact so negatively on the well-being particularly of site workers. This was the subject of her challenge to policy-makers, to focus on these systemic issues. Fred is a distinctive, passionate and compelling communicator, and this is a great watch, or listen, for any young person whether at school or college, in the industry, or in academia. Spread the word!
