Professor Stephen Emmitt, Editor-in-Chief of Building Research & Information (BR&I) commenced CIB’s ‘Meet the Editor’ series. Professor Emmitt joined the University of Bath in May 2014 as Professor of Architectural Practice and became Head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in August 2016. Thirty-four attendees logged in to hear Stephen’s presentation where he delivered an overview of BR&I’s philosophical approach to publishing and background on how editors and the editorial board think about research quality. Professor Emmitt engaged with the group for a full hour thoughtfully answering the group’s questions such as:
- What is the maximum page length?
- How do you deal with type 1 vs type 2 errors (false positive vs false negative) when you receive manuscripts?
- Can you please clarify how do you match a manuscript with reviewers?
- Do you extend any help or assistance to early carrier researchers whose submission may have promise but definitely need coaching to develop the work to get to published?
- Any recommendations for Early Career Researcher to start writing and publishing articles?
- What are some of the common mistakes/errors made by authors that (may) lead to a manuscript being rejected?
- How do you handle opposing comments from reviewers? One reviewer says the paper is okay and another submits several negative comments.
- Does the Editor treat all Reviewers’ views as equal? When there are diametrically opposite comments, would any weighting of Reviewers experience in the manuscript’s topic/methodology come into play?
